A robust ko-katchushi tsuba from the Muromachi period for shoto.  Good color and condition.  73mm x 70mm x 4mm at the mimi and 3mm at the seppadai.  An austere, well-preserve guard features cutting tool called a nata that is used to cutaway overgrowth.  It is believed the Buddha, Siddhattha Gotama achieved enlightenment under a bodhi tree in his parent’s garden.  The garden symbolizes paradise and the nata keep overgrowth (humanly desires) under control.  The single hitsu-ana is uncommon as it is fashioned for a solitary kogai instead of being paired with kozuka-ana.  Provinance Robert Haynes.
