Bizen Sukesada Katana

KK0516

SOLD

An ubu koto katana signed, Bishu Osafune Sukesada (助定), not one of the myriad (祐定).  He was active around Eikyo (1429 - 1441).  Shinogizukure, iroi mune, chukissaki, deep sakizori.  Hawatare:  2 saku 3 sun 9 bu 2.5 rin (72.5 cm / 28.54")   Motohaba:  3 .06 cm.  Sakihaba:   2.18  cm.   Kasane:  6.04 mm.   Gunome midare, togare, ashi, yo, ha nie, nado. The keisho polish is very heavy, so seeing the details of the hamon is difficult.  The jigane is itame with masame in, and just below the shinogiji.   Mounted in shirasaya with a one piece copper habaki, NBTHK Hozon kanteisho.

There is a theory that swords signed Osafune Sukesada, that Osafune is part of the name or a title, rather than Osafune ju Sukesada, living at Osafune.  If there is an afterlife, and I learn archaic Japanese, I'll inquire about this.   $3,500

Glimps of hamon though the keisho.
