An important set of signed and dated menuki by Haruaki Hogen. Shakudo, silver, copper, and gold of ducks in the water. 3.51 cm x 1.64 cm / 3.41 cm x 1.58 cm. Signed, Haruaki / Hogen on the bottom edge. Inscribed on the back, Shonatsu (beginning summer) [Kakihan]. Koka otsumi (1844 second [year of the] snake). Hakogaki: Haruaki Hogen Menuki / description of caring and metal / Ducks / Showa Kanoto-ushi shoka Shô'an" (辛丑初夏松庵), "early summer of 1961, Shô'an". "Shô'an, his family name was Hino (日野), was a kodogu expert and wrote several relevant articles, also about koshirae. I don't know what his real first name was because Shô'an seems to be a pen name but he is always referred to by the name Hino Shô'an sensei."*
Haruaki Hogen 1787 - December 26, 1857 at the age of sixteen, he went to study with Yanagawa Naoharu. Upon competition of his studies, at age 20, he was granted the used of the Haru kanji. He established his own studio in Tokyo, and by the age of 33 was recognize by the Tokugawa Bakufu, given the middle court rank, chumu, and the title of Hokkyo. At about the age of 40 he was given the title Hogen. He had thirty or more students, who often signed his name. Genuine examples of his signature are very rare. Ref.
