Kanshiro Distant Pines

Nishigaki Kanshiro Copper tsuba with a brass fukurin.  7.77 cm x 7.77 cm  x 4.9 mm at the fukurin.
Unsigned but attributed to the third Nishigaki Kanshiro (1680-1761) the design is mount Fuji with distant pines trees.
 
Its made using a technique taken from the Dutch or Chinese in the late 16th century and first mastered by Hirata Hikozo and used by the first three Kanshiro masters. The design is first painted on the surface in lacquer then the surrounding area is reduced by acid. 
 
There is another example of a 3rd Kanshiro copper tsuba made using the same technique illustrated in Ito Mitsuru book on Kanshiro works ( tsuba 260 )                                                   Write up by Michael Cox
