A yoroidoshi signed and dated, Shibata Jo Zaijinchu Eiyu (great person) no Konomi ni Yori Katsutoshi Tsukuru Kore (made at the Shibata's castle the outskirt s in the center of an army position by Katsutoshi) / Meiji Kigen Boshin Taikan (Mid-winter 1868, fifth year of the zodiacal cycle). Hirazukure, uchizori, iroi mune, the nakago is marumune. Hawatare 6 sun 4 bu 5 rin (19.5 cm / 7.69"). hamachi: 2.07. Kasane: 8.6 mm. Suuguba, ko-midare tight habuchi, in nioi deki. The boshi is komaru with an extended kaeri. Itame hada. Mounted in well made western shirasaya of a soft wood, not honoki. Good one piece silver foil habaki. NTHK kanteisho from the shinsa in Chicago 2004. Everything is visible, but some surface scratching requires another polish and new shirasaya.
Katsutoshi was from Echigo. He was active around Keio (1865 - 1868), and early Meiji. The Nihonto Meikan only references dated swords at Keio 4, and Meiji 3. $2,200
