Kunimitsu Wakisashi

KK0535

An ubu wakizashi signed nijimei Kunimitsu.  Hawatare:   1 shaku 6 sun 0 bu 3 rin (48.577 cm / 19.125"). Motohaba:  2.544 cm. Sakihaba: 1.772 cm.  Kasane: 5.76 mm. Ubu, one mekugiana, shinogizukure, torizori, chu kissaki.  Hosho suguba, but the condition obscures any details.  No apparent kizu, one small hakobori.  The mei is clearly atobori, cut over old rust pits, whether an addition to a mumei nakago, or recutting and existing signature will remain a mystery.  The short nakago with the chestnut end, makes it look like Muromachi Bizen.   The fact that it is not a pronounced sakizori, makes me lean toward early Muromachi -- but they write books about what I don't know, many of them with text like "See Dick, see Jane, see Spot run", and other such learned materials..

Very good koshirae.  The lack lacquered saya has pockets for both kozuka and kogai, tsuneno, horn kurikata and koiguchi.  Excellent condition.   The tsuka appears to be very early with  iron fuchi kashira,  fine gain black shark skin or same tsuka,  shakudo horse menuki appear to be early.  There is a kinko mekugi screw, something commonly seen in pre Edo. Edo.     So the tsuka has likely been refitted.  Ko kinko tsuba of  well aged yamagane decorated with brass trees, pine needles, and clam shells,  6.263 cm x 5.577 cm x 3.91 mm.

This requires a polisher's window to determine what the blade is.  The koshirae speaks of something pretty good, but that can also be used to misdirect.  Were it not a consignment, I would be tempted to explore it further.  $2,200
