Shimosaka Suyari

An ubu sankaku suyari in fresh polish and shirasaya, signed Echizen Kuni Shimosaka. Overall length of shirasaya 76 cm.  Overall length of yari  31.7 cm.  Length of point to tang  3 sun 9 bu 6 rin (12 cm. / 4.72").  Hamon is chu suguba, in ko nie deki.  The jigane, as in most suyari, is masame.  Shinto Shimosaka swords are valued from 3,000,000 yen to 8,000,000 yen according to Tokuno in Toko Taikan.  Though Fujishiro only lists the Genroku (1688 - 1704) smith and rates him  chu saku, leaving many generations unmentioned.  In Shinto Taikan there is a signature of Shimosaka working in Kanei (1624 -1644) that is a match for this yari.

I believe that the slight variation in the signature may be attributed to the width of the tang.
