Shinshinto Katana

A well mounted Shinshinto katana, ubu, mumei, in period koshirae.   Shinogizukure, toriizori, iroi mune, chu kissaki.  Hawatare:  2 shaku 2 sun 9 bu  (69.69 cm / 27.44").  Motohaba:  2.98 cm.  Sakihaba:  2.12 cm.  Kasane:  7.1 mm.  Hako choji midare, togare, nioi deki, deep ashi iri, bright habuchi, nado.  Tight itame hada.

Black leather tsukamaki, well patinaed  copper and gold menuki.  Higo iron fuchi-kashira, and kojiri ensuite decorated with a bee, butterfly, and dragon fly in silver.  The intact saya is red and black stippled lacquer.  The Kaga zogan tsuba has silver butterflies, and gold lines indicating either water or breeze.

Although this is mumei, it is evident that a signature has been covered up with resin and rust.  The first kanji appears to be Kane, the second is too obscured for me to read.   So likely a gimei big smith who signed Kane something.

An excellent sword for the newer collector or martial arts enthusiast.

What appears to be an attempt to remove, or cover a mei.
