Kanshiro Matsu

LS023

from the Skip Holbrook collection, listed as Shodai Kanshiro.  A true classic Nishigaki Kanshiro matsu (pine tree) sukaski iron tsuba  8.1 cm x 8.03 cm x 5.21 mm

Its large proportions, fine black iron colour and delicate kebori decoration strongly suggest the work of the shodia Kanshiro (born 1613 died 1693) who was a pupil of Hirata Hikozo under the patronage of Hosokawa Sansai. The sangai matsu (three storey or layered pine) is beautifully depicted in this tsuba.

A very rare and desirable Kanshiro tsuba.   Ref.  Haynes, Nihon Toso Kinko Daijiten, H 02673.0                      $4,500

Thanks to Michael Cox  for the write up.

Note:  Letter from Skip Holbrook noting that this tsuba sold for $4,500 in the 1990's.
